Summary
Should a customer express concern about vibrations and oscillations of the steering wheel at speeds between80 and 120 km/h, the probable cause is excessive stress between the front crossmember and the chassis of the vehicle. To rectify this concern, first check the wheels/tyres and the brakes to make sure that there are no other possible causes for the vibrations. In addition, align the crossmember and check and adjust the front wheel alignment.

Checking and balancing the wheels and tyres
- Raise the vehicle. Remove the wheels.

l the tyres are at the correct pressure,
l there is no obvious damage to the wheels and tyres,
l the wheels and tyres are of the specified size and type,
l the tread depth is OK and the tyres have not worn on one side,
l balance the wheels if necessary, and in doing so ensure that the remaining imbalance does not exceed a tolerance of ± 5g. Install the wheels.
Checking the components of the steering and the drivetrain
-
Visually check the track rods, drive halfshafts and track rod joints for damage and excessive play, and carry out any repairs as required.
-
Check the wheel bearings for excessive play and carry out repairs as necessary.
Aligning the front crossmember

All four wheels must be taking the weight of the vehicle when the bolts on the front crossmember are released.
Note:
Only undo the bolts, do not completely take them out.
- Release the front crossmember.
1 Undo the bolts 1,5 turns.
2 Front crossmember
